The man in the Mirror - by John Davidson
How do we measure what really matters in life?
After enjoying a 30 year career in broadcasting, I thought that some golf and fishing might be just around the corner. But instead there was a life-changing adventure waiting for me.
As a life-long learner, I knew that the book shops of the world are full of ‘how to’ material ranging from books to audio tapes and DVDs. There are podcasts, seminars and workshops all geared towards success. Commerce and the bottom line tend to be the focus of a lot of these tools.
There are also programmes designed to speak to who we are, where we fit in with the team at the office, and how we see ourselves in relation to the world.
Balance between business and personal life can be very elusive, and yet sometimes the simplest solutions are right in front of us, if we would just take a look and ask ourselves the right questions.
What would make a 52-year-old father who is not an athlete, but a regular dad, walk more than 8,000 kilometres across Canada to raise money for research?

What are the characteristics and behaviours of a change saboteur? Read more...

Communication? Or talk, more talk...
Cast your mind back to a time (not so long ago) when verbal communication was the only tool available to us (OK, smoke signals and cave drawings don’t count).
These days, being caught up in a myriad of communication tools, we can forget the essentials of what communication should be. Herein lies the problem for leadership teams, who depend on clear messages and shared understanding, always based on trust!
Let's focus for a moment on shared understanding. Read more...
